Tournament update!

Good news! TKA has decided to top up the winner's pot to DOUBLE it in size, meaning for every dollar collected thru entrance fees TKA will add an additional dollar to the prize pot.

I've updated the previous post with updates on tournament prizes and format! As for the format I've confirmed that there will indeed be group stages just like before. This means all participants will get a minimum of 4 games in.

On a side note, what do you guys think of the NEXT tournament after this Friday's to be 2v2?

More tournament vids are up! Friday tournament update!

http://www.youtube.com/user/atatashai

The rest of the tournament videos are up! Apologies if your match didn't make it to youtube, I had to delete some matches at the last minute during the semis because my camera was running out of memory. >_<

Anyways, as for this Friday, everything's the same as last week. I'm going to re-post my original tournament announcement right now, just bear in mind that the cost of each game aside from the $2 registration fee is unconfirmed. At the very least, it will be 1token/game, same as last time. I also want to encourage everyone to come down earlier if they can to register at 7:30.

Hope everyone's been having a great CNY! =)

Time: 8pm. Come down after work and dinner!

Place: Virtualand, B1 Bugis Junction. (Right on top of Bugis MRT)Website: http://www.tkaworld.com/

Entry Fee and Prizes: $2, pay for your own games. All entry fees will be converted into TKA Virtualand tokens that will make up the 'pot'. This must be done because prizes cannot be in cash, as doing such would violate the anti-gambling laws of the land.

1st Place wins 50% of the total token pot.
2nd Place wins 30% of the total token pot.
3rd Place wins 20% of the total token pot.

**UPDATE!!**
TKA has decided to chip in and effectively DOUBLE the pot prize. This means that for every dollar collected from entry fees, TKA will be topping up an additional dollar to that.

Rules :
- No characters are banned.
- Each match will be best of 3 or 5, depending on time constraints.
- All players must indicate the character they wish to use upon registration. No switching mid-tournament allowed, Japanese style.
- No forms of physical and/or verbal intimidation outside of the game shall be used whatsoever. This is a friendly tournament people.
- Due to legal issues, winners may NOT sell their tokens for cash within the TKA Virtualand premises.

**UPDATE!!**
Format: Group stage matches. This allows every player to get at least 4 games in.

Frequently asked questions!!

Q: How often will you be hosting these tournaments?
A: Depending on the turnout. I'm looking at doing this every other week. (Bi-weekly/fortnightly) The higher the turnout, the more often these tournaments will be held.

Q: Why should I join this tournament? Won't all the 'pros' be there?! I won't have a chance of winning!
A: Because of this.

The above link is a must-read in my opinion.

And also because I hope we'll all have a good time knowing the rest of the people in the Singapore SF4 scene. Let's all have fun playing this game that we all love together!

For those that think they're really good, come down and prove it.

Q: Why are you hosting this tournament? What do you have to gain from it?
A: I don't receive any money whatsoever from this. There are two big reasons why I'm doing this.
1) To get the whole SF4 Singapore community together. Currently, it's pretty fragmented.
2) To increase the level of SF4 play in Singapore. From what I hear, there's a good chance that top Japanese players will be invited to compete at the next TKA SF4 tournament here. The possibility of that, and I want to put Singapore's SF4 scene on the world map with match videos and hopefully see some Singaporeans at international tournaments soon!

If you have any questions you can email me at tien_lang@hotmail.com. See you next Friday!

Special thanks to Bernard from TKA Virtualand for giving this event the green light and full support.

New look+Registration-Free Commenting

As you can tell I've ripped off the arcade banner and used it as the website banner...for now. Plus, you can now comment on this blog without having to register with blogspot or google!

Announcing the second SF4 Singapore casual tournament 30/1/09 @ Virtualand Bugis Junction!!!

It's been a long and tiring week for me as I just moved house. I've just regained internet access so my apologies for the delay in uploading the rest of the videos from last week's tournament.

Anyhow, there's reason to cheer because, as promised, the next SF4Singapore/TKA Virtualand casual tournament will go ahead next Friday! Same time, same place. I'm currently in negotiations with TKA as to the pricing of the games. Furthermore, we may have some surprise prizes in store this time. Stay tuned for updates as I don't have much time to post, but I just want to get the word out that indeed next week's tournament is ON so everyone can start preparing.

I also want to remind everyone that this is a CASUAL tournament with a really low entry fee and not much at stake. The main focus of this tournament is fun, laughter and friendship so don't worry too much if you're not confident of winning. Just come down, participate and be part of the friendly SF4 community that's growing daily. =)

The finals of the first SF4Singapore+Bugis Virtualand, 16/01/09

Incredible matches by Raven and the Champion, Weijie. Solid play by both players. I can honestly say, with lots of bias of course (=p), that the finals were one of the best SF4 matches I've seen so far.

Congratulations to these two and of course, Peihoon for nabbing 3rd place from me haha. Congratulations to all those who didn't win, didn't think they could win, or had no idea what they were doing, but still joined the tournament nonetheless. I believe that you've leveled yourself up as a player and person tremendously by playing under the pressure of competition.

And a big THANK YOU to all who made it down to support the tourney. It looked like everyone was having lots of fun and it was great seeing good sportsmanship all around.

Expect more videos up soon. In the meantime, enjoy this.

Finals, round 1. (best of 3 bouts)feat. Raven(Ba) vs WeiJie(Ry)

And here's round 2.

A second greeting

I'm expecting more traffic on this blog in the coming days with the blog banner now up in Bugis, and eventually plastered on all SF4 machines in Singapore. Also, Friday's tournament was a raving success with 20 participants and lots of great matches, I hope you guys enjoyed it.

So here's a big hello to all new visitors. Expect the tournament videos to be posted up here in the next few days, along with the announcement regarding the next tournament.

In the meantime I've been reading through a lot of stuff from www.gootecks.com . If you're interested in leveling up your SF4 game (which you should be if you're reading this in the first place), do check out that website. I also want to encourage everyone to sign up at the www.shoryuken.com forums. Let's make our presence known to the world. Every time I get new footage I make sure the news is there on the main video threads there.

Bye for now!

Should we always play to win?

Props to Mark's response to my previous post regarding the Sirlin article I posted. While I hold the view that all playing styles are legitimate (yes, that includes hardcore turtling), I certainly would like to see Singapore players be more creative and adventurous during casual play. The merits of which are brilliantly articulated in this article which I recommend everyone who hasn't read it to read it. Heck, if you've read it I recommend reading it again.

http://www.sirlin.net/ptw-book/love-of-the-game-not-playing-to-win.html

Coming back from Korea, casual games at Bugis currently do feel more 'serious' than they were when I was there. I don't believe this is the fault of any individuals, tempting as it is to name a few. In fact, I think it's a mostly cultural reason why casuals in Bugis are so serious. Kiasuism perhaps? The cost of each game isn't helping things much either, whereas in Korea games were going for about 40cents a pop.

However, one big reason why games in Bugis can seem so serious is because, so far, tournaments have been few and far between. Therefore, casuals become a bigger outlet for players to prove their worth, because there's no alternative. "The last tournament was ages go. Lately, I get 30 win streaks easily on Friday night whereas you only get 10 consistently. I'm better than you now" may be what some people are thinking in terms of where they stand. If we had more tournaments which provided the true test of our A-game and gauges of skill, then maybe we won't be as compelled to win at all costs during casuals.

Nevertheless, I have total respect for the guys at Bugis who bring their A-game 100% of the time. Playing you always pushes my limits whether I like it or not, and that's why I want to see more SF4 tournaments in Singapore. Lets all attend and support as many tournaments as we can.
